Identity

0 Yawns
I was always mistaken as a Malay here, no doubt about that. It's my skin tone.

I remember when I was in KL studying, some strangers whispered among themselves about 'this Malay girl' (me) dating a Chinese. I was moving house at that time. So I pretended not to understand whatever they were talking about.

Then there was this time when I was in a taxi, the Chinese driver asked if I'm Malay mixed. So I said yes and played along. We were having conversations in the car and I tried so hard not to give away hints but I think I occasionally let slip my Sabahan accent but it doesn't matter I think and it's funny because I can speak Chinese and I know he can, but I just want to play along. And of all topics, he had to talk about rape.

Another time was in Sungei Wang shopping when a sales girl excitedly asked if I'm from Hawaii. LOL!! Of all features. She was so shocked when I replied to her in Cantonese.  She was embarrassed.

Then when I went holiday in China, the sales person would always face difficulty in assessing which language to speak to me. They will try from Japanese to Korean to some remote languages I never heard of.

The most recent one happened during my trip to Hong Kong. Most, I think mistaken me as coming from China because my Canto sounded somewhat different from theirs until when I look puzzled at some words, only they guessed I am probably from Malaysia or Singapore. I had the best time in Hong Kong differentiating the Cantonese accents coming from different parts of the world. I can say the easiest to distinguish is those from China because it sounds softer and more polite while I think those from KL, Penang and Singapore carries a little bit of Hokkien in them.

And then there was this sales person in a Chinese herb shop (I think she's from China) who confidently greeted me with "Sawadikaap" and spoke fluent Thai with me. I was like :-O :-O :-O ! No idea what she was talking about until I had to say, "我不懂..." (I don't understand). I don't know who should be more embarrassed, me or her.

"Opposition Leader" sex scandal, really?

0 Yawns
In a country where people pretend to be religious god says this and god says that, sex scandals or at least purported sex scandals excites people or so it seems. Yes, it was amusing when Chua Soi Lek was caught with his pants down years ago leading to his resignation. But so what..he got elected to be MCA's president anyway. So anti-climax.

Now back to this "Top Opposition Leader". Seriously, don't think we're that stupid to not know who this Datuk T is implying. And seriously, who is actually following the current court case religiously? Charge of sodomy meh sodomy lah...not like I care.

Also, don't tell me one man has to be 'caught' twice (2 times!!!!) and yet never learn his lesson. If it's really true, he better start having those out of wedlock relationship in his very own house at the sight of his wife without the cameras or any recording devices. Foolproof the house with recording devices if possible.

It's amazing that some people can be so obsess with who this "Top Opposition Leader"  is sleeping with and probably the outlook of his sexual organ. *shakes head in disbelief.

Anyway, we shouldn't be interested with the new sex saga unless it comes with the video footages. I am actually waiting, if any, will be released. Censor it if needed but let us see if Datuk T (who bravely revealed himself to reporters but not the public) has a valid allegation.

Otherwise, this whole will just a miserably failed attempt to tarnish a person's image via the most condemnable dirtiest tactic.

Shaking hands a Malaysian issue?

0 Yawns
In Malaysia, whether someone wants to shake hands or not is a huge issue!

In headlines : Normala defends refusal to shake hands with men with came up because MCA (or rather Chua Soi Lek) has problems with people who refuses to shake hands. I mean......................*lost for words.

I for one believe that whether someone who shakes hands or not is not a problem. .I can accept those who refuse to shake hand as a clash of culture.  It's fair that we can't force someone to go against his/her religion or personal convictions. No problem.

Not shaking hand is good simply because we don't have to touch anyone's hand who just sneezed, dug his nose, scratched his body, removed a wedgie etc..Even better because girls doesn't have to touch any hamsap hands belonging to those who shake hands just to see whether we have applied enough lotions.

But I will still shake hands lah..just to show I'm pleased to meet the person. And I promise to keep my hands clean when doing so.

Malaysian Patriotism

0 Yawns
It is revealed our Defence Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is quite eccentric when he said that the "lack of patriotism" is the reason for low number of non-Malays to join the arm forces. Read here.

WOW

One pertinent question before I continue : How is one's career choice determines his patriotism?
Next question is : How do we measure patriotism?
Next next question is : What is patriotism?

Next following the next question : If patriotism is measured by joining the arm forces, should we, Malaysians of all races, religion, age and gender sign up to join the arm forces so that we can show our patriotism?

You know, I think it's kinda cool to have the whole country of armies. It must be cool to stay and work in the barracks and to free ourselves from bread and butter issues (because the government is going to pay our salaries). It'll be so cool that day in day out we'll only have to wait for war befalling on our country (God forbid!). If the imagined enemies fail to show up at our shores, fret not. We'll  just head home after 5.30pm to catch up some drama series from Astro.

Good Malaysians needless be perplexed on this issue. Time is better spent in planning for your holidays after purchasing that free seat from AirAsia.

Excuse me, what is wrong with vernacular schools?

2 Yawns
I really do not know what is the hoo-hah about these vernacular schools except that it is just any other regular national schools, except maybe the medium of instruction is not in Malay.

Recently there are spat amongst the Malays (I'm not sure left or right wing since I can't differentiate it) and those so-called very Malaysians inside out to the core called for the abolishment of vernacular schools. Outrageous I tell you! For the record, I did not graduate from vernacular school but I'm still going to speak for it nevertheless. I'm all for learning mother tongue.

Point one - Regular National type schools does not offer mother tongue subjects

Ya ya..we all know the pride of Bahasa Jiwa Bangsa (language the heart of a race) and the super importance of English being the international language. Everybody is rushing to brush up their fluency in English (some refused to improve their English because they think being monolingual in Malay language is sufficient to survive in Malaysia) that mother tongue seems completely obsolete.  So they start attacking those who are determined to learn and speak mother tongues by saying that these people refuses to assimilate. Anti-social they call them. :-(

  • Mother tongue = adopting the Singaporean definition, it means the language of one's ethnic group regardless of actual proficiency.
Mother tongues are symbol of cultural identity. Speaking any other language besides Malay or English does not make someone less Malaysian. Malaysia is made up of many many races and religions. So being strictly monolingual or bilingual doesn't look very Malaysian, don't you think? Ok, at the very least, it doesn't hurt to acquire a third, fourth or fifth language. Vernacular school is the solution.

Point two - Malay language is a compulsory subject in vernacular schools

Clearly, if vernacular school students are 'retarded' in communicating in Malay, the solution is to call for more quality language education in these schools. Get more proficient Malay language teachers perhaps?

Hate their squarish accent? Not everyone is perfect lah. We don't poke fun at those who can't speak fluent Mandarin aside from giggling from an out of tune pronunciation. Look, I've mis-pronounced hell load of times. Lantak lah!

p/s: Speaking about fluency, does anyone actually speak Bahasa Malaysia BAKU?

Point three - the Laws does not prohibit it

Please refer to Article 152 of the Federal Constitution and Section 17 of the Education Act 1996.

Article 152: (1) The national language shall be the Malay language and shall be in such script as Parliament may by law provide:
Provided that -
(a) no person shall be prohibited or prevented from using (otherwise than for official purposes), or from teaching or learning, any other language; and
(b) nothing in this Clause shall prejudice the right of the Federal Government or of any State Government to preserve and sustain the use and study of the language of any other community in the Federation.

Section 17 Education Act:   National language as the main medium of instruction.
(1) The national language shall be the main medium of instruction in all educational institutions in the National Education System expect a national-type school established under section 28 or any other educational institution exempted by the Minister from this subsection.
(2) Where the main medium of instruction in an educational institution is other than the national language, the national language shall be taught as a compulsory subject in the educational institution.

Am glad that Malaysian laws are supportive of allowing everyone to learn other languages. As a matter of fact, Malaysians are envied because we can are multilingual. Never mind if we can't master a language 100%. Who cares, as long as the message can go across.

Point four - Hindrance to unity?!

Look, enrollment to vernacular schools are not limited to that particular type of race only. There are so many Malays and Kadazans who are fluent in Mandarin that I have to beat myself to shame for being illiterate in the Chinese characters.

With due respect, openly name-calling Chinese as 'mata sepet' (squinty eyes) and Indians 'si botol' (drunkard) is more hindrance to unity especially if it's coming from a  person representing the National Civics Bureau. Though I do not have squinty eyes but I can't understand what is so hard about referring to a group of people properly.

Further, the curriculum in vernacular schools are approved by the Ministry of Education. They learn the same Malaysian history and geography as other national typed schools. So what unity are we talking about here?

Actually, the truth is that malicious prejudice against others is much much more a hindrance to national unity. Eg: stereotyping ethnic Chinese as 'ultra-kiasu' or 'pelacur' (prostitute), stereotyping Malays as lazy pigs, stereotyping Indians as cheaters, snakes. There may be favourable percentage to the truth of those stereotypes but I'm sure there are much more positive ways to address the problems rather than to express ourselves in the negative manner.

I believe in the sayings of 'birds of the same feathers flock together'. I too get ostracized whenever I don't belong to the same wavelength with others but hey, that's the reality of life.

You and I have been of school age so we know that kids are skin colour blind. It is the parents and teachers who should re-educate themselves or refrain from sowing seeds of discord and disharmony on their kids. But with cases like Siti Inshah's, I think well....I rest my case.

.....

Until and unless the government provide mother tongues as subjects in national typed schools, I think it's only fair to keep those vernacular schools.

Give Yong Vui Kong a Second Chance to Help Singapore’s Anti-Drug Trafficking Policy Petition

3 Yawns
Give Yong Vui Kong a Second Chance to Help Singapore’s Anti-Drug Trafficking Policy Petition

Yong Vui Kong, a 22-year old Malaysian, was sentenced to mandatory death in January 2009, for trafficking 47 grams of Heroin into Singapore. He had exhausted his appeals by August this year and he’ll be hanged next month! He can only escape execution if the Singapore President grants clemency.

Yong Vui Kong, a 22 year old young man from Sabah, is about to be hanged in Singapore.
He was arrested in 13 June 2007, when he was 18 years and 6 months old, by officers from the Central Narcotics Bureau, Singapore. He was later charged with trafficking drug amounting to 47.27g of heroin, an offence under s 5(1)(a) of the Misuse of Drugs Act (Cap 185). He was convicted in 7 January 2009 and sentenced to death.
In Singapore there is a mandatory death sentence for all drug trafficking cases involving more than 15g of heroin leaving judges no discretion to consider factors such as age, background of the offender or other special circumstances.
Yong was brought up in poverty and had taken on odd jobs at an early age of 10. He received very little education and was left alone without any real guidance. These have eventually led him to the path that damages others’ lives. Yong is a changed person after his imprisonment. Finding faith in Buddhism, he is using the remaining days of his life to counsel fellow inmates and also educate the general public on how drugs destroy life.
Youg Vui Kong has exhausted his appeals. The only hope for his life being spared is if he is granted clemency and his death sentence is commuted to a prison sentence.
The last day for Yong to file petition for clemency is 26 August 2010. After which he will be hanged at anytime.  But his clemency appeal was tinted after the Law Minister K Shanmugam’s controversial comments on the case.
Please take a few minutes to support this urgent petition that appeal to President of the Republic of Singapore, Mr S.R Nathan to give a second chance to Yong.
You can sign the on-line petition and forward the following link to your contacts for support.

Don't ever get sick!!

2 Yawns
If possible, don't ever get sick! This is something I discovered in Facebook which is shocking and worth worrying. Read the wall post by Robiatul Akhma Mohammad.

This is what she posted:

Robiatul Akhma Mohamad kayu api dalam neraka esok2 ni...tapi sedeh fikirkan sape la mak ayah dia ni...lahirkan ank yang......hati penuh ngan titik hitam dah ni...if kata ape2 pom kompem xjalan ni..patutnyer bila dia sakit bagi injection KCL trus,.bia jantung dia xhidup..xlayak bernafas kt bumi ALLAH SWT ni..nauzubillah..

Thursday at 01:17 · Flag

A nurse suggesting to inject KCL to some guy named "Kafir Bangga" for insulting Islam. A NURSE??!!!

I'm kind enough to paint over their eyes. But I think this is not a joke matter for a nurse, trainee or even someone in the medical profession to say such things. She may have directed it at Kafir Bangga only, but hey, it's still ethically and morally wrong to say such things. It shows that she may someday abuse her position as a nurse to KCL anyone who stepped on her precious tail. Gosh, I'm taking a risk here against the entire nursing profession or anyone in the medical profession who thinks like her. Dangerous wei!!

In case you're wondering who Kafir Bangga is, please read here.

To know what KCL is, please read here and here.

"KCl is used in medicine, scientific applications, food processing and in judicial execution through lethal injection."

"The intravenous injection is usually a sequence of drugs given in a set sequence, designed to first induce unconsciousness followed by death through paralysis of respiratory muscles and/or by cardiac arrest through depolarization of cardiac muscle cells. The execution of the condemned in most states involves three separate injections (in sequential order):

  1. Sodium thiopental: ultra-short action barbiturate, an anaesthetic agent capable of rendering the prisoner unconscious in a few seconds.
  2. Pancuronium: non-depolarizing muscle relaxant, causes complete, fast and sustained paralysis of the skeletal striated muscles, including the diaphragm and the rest of the respiratory muscles; this would eventually cause death by asphyxiation.
  3. Potassium chloride: stops the heart, and thus causes death by cardiac arrest."

OMG.

Is it time to give up on Malaysia?

4 Yawns
Recently there are many stupid PERKOSA news. Such as Here and here.

Today I saw some discussion in Facebook where some fellas suddenly turn hostile and dug up history and debate as to who is 'pendatang' and who is not. So I thought I want to give my ultimatum and this is what I posted:-

"
Dearsssss....let's us not fight over this...why not we kumpul duit migrate je lah...ALL OF US non-malay. Sounds good? Let them fight to death their Ketuanan what not...I'm getting sick and tired of all these.

It feels like shit being labelled as Pendatang over and over again even though it is not my choice or intention to be born here. When I'm studying and working my ass off for this country, all i get is to be reminded that I'm a pendatang. WTH

Thank you Malaysia, I'm very grateful. And to Ibrahim Ali and Mae oh Mae for reminding me."

And do you know what kind of response I've got? This:-

Mae Oh Mae

Karen, there is no sizeable Melayu community in China or any part of the world. Why, because we are lazy. Being lazy, we are peaceful people, we dont go to other people's place and kacau them. Unlike your stock, who came here, buat bising-bising, want to make this Tanah Melayu as yours. I sometime wonder why the current generation of Malaysian ... See MoreChinese is not as movable as their grandfathers who came from China. Nowadays, transports are easily available, but because they became lazy as well, they dont want to move out, especially after they found out that the native (Malays) can be easily conned.

I feel like I just got stabbed in the lungs. Should I or should I not have suggested to move out from Malaysia?

Yo, yo #yorais

2 Yawns
I don't know how I should contain my laughter when the twitter space welcomed a new hashtag addition - #yorais to 'celebrate' our minister infamous announcement to discourage fellow Malaysians (especially Muslims) to immerse in the internet culture. Read here.

"He added that facilities like internet could not be accepted wholly because it was a form of business introduced by the West and "Malaysians were just users."

"They are just selling Facebook, Twitter, L-Band and various other services, even through space, as a product but we do not do such business. We accept all this in a state of cultural shock," he said.

-------------------------------------------

Is our dear minister of the misinformed jealous of other people's developments?

After reading my friend's blog about it, I decided to check out the tweets myself and found these tweets:-

#yorais so ancient, when Julius Caesar was assassinated, he amended Caesar's last words "Et tu, Brute?" to "Itu... puteh?"

not sure who is uncivilised... us or the ancient #yorais

Politicians divide their time between running for office and running for cover.#yorais

#yorais: Boss sokong Twit2 ni? Adik.tangkap burung2 merpati cepattt! Memo kte mesti ikut orang2 gila ni di Twttr skrng

Someone didn't got the memo on social media sites? PM wants to further connect with FB and Twitter fans

#yorais will say that "Catholicism is not our culture"

#yorais what exactly the country's aspirations again?

Sifat KeMalaysiaan perlu kuat untuk pakai Facebook dan Twitter. - Rais Yatim. Bwahahahahahaha!! *out of breath* #dinorais

”Women travelling aboard should produce letter of consent from parents or employers. ” #dinorais

I think #dinorais is in a state of culture shock, but tries to cover up by saying"we", same as the excuse "some" people will get confused :p

and the most hilarious of all

Was anyone late for exam?

1 Yawns
Luckily yesterday's KL morning road block did not affect me as I left my house at 6.15am.

Otherwise..I'll be late for the exam! I saw the massive jam from PJ in the Federal Highway at 6.30am, goodness, so much hardwork of getting up early and try to get to work on time for these normal citizens. They thought they could beat the jam but instead, the jam beats them --"Wake up earlier next time!!".

If I happen to get stuck in that jam, all my hardwork poured in during these few months will go into the waste of roadblocks . I'd probably scream my soul out.

Such scary thoughts.

Return "Milk" to Sabah

0 Yawns
I found this picture really amusing and true and hence thought of posting it here. The author said that there's no copyright attached and it is free for use.

Sadly I have to remind my friends that all riches in Sabah has gone to KL (manpower, natural resources and monehhhhh), and part of it is the Petronas Twin Towers and/or KL Tower and more. It should instead be re-named to Borneo Towers (sharing it with S'wakians since we're on the same island).

Breaking news....(it will break) Fuel hike RM0.78 less than 24 hours notice

0 Yawns
So petrol price will increase to RM2.70 per littre with effect from 12am today. RM2.70!!! Crazy meh...

After this, not only petrol price will increase but everything else except salary.

Just now, I bought one packet of nasi lemak near college with a price of RM2.30. Last month (barely few days ago) was RM2 per packet.

Today's double boil soup at the shop cost RM4 per bowl while last month was RM3.80. I heard a bag of 10kg rice now cost about RM58! Hey....I think i'll have to reduce portion of my meal (my current portion is small enough), and probably 2 meals a day. Nevermind going hungry.

Just when I thought of switching to induction cooker and other electrical appliance, another jolt came when Tenaga Nasional will increase price of electricity by 18%. So brace up people! Start eating raw food people.....at least salad is not too bad, add some mayo for carbs!
It's good to start your own mini farm at home by planting vege and fruits. I wonder if a small plot at home to plant paddy will work. But rearing chickens at home is no-no:-
(1) the chicken shit smells
(2) Tedious for working adults
(3) Can you eat your own 'pet'?

Perhaps the government should spend more to invest on solar power. Afterall, Malaysia is blessed with ample sunlight throughout the year (except when it thunderstorms). So, I plead for government to put aside the astronout programme for a while.

Encourage citizens to cycle is not too bad. But Prime Minister and his Deputy should take the lead. But THANKS LAH PRIME MINISTER TO ANNOUNCE THE PETROL HIKE AT THE 11th HOUR! It was so much fun being stuck at the jam.

At around 8.30pm, petrol is sold out in most KL stations.
